If there was one musical encounter that was hard to imagine, it was that of Lang Lang with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. On the one hand, the 32-year-old Chinese pianist, a classical music rock star with 150,000 Twitter followers, known as much for his pianistic prestidigitation in the Romantic repertoire as for his celebrity media appearances (with Metallica at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, with Placido Domingo for the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro). On the other, the incorruptible 84-year-old Austrian cellist and conductor, a leading figure in baroque music, a respected intellectual and informed musician, a revolutionary Mozartian. This album is Lang Lang's first entirely dedicated to Mozart with conductor Harnoncourt and the Vienna Philharmonic. With its Austrian tradition, it is the best orchestra when it comes to playing Mozart.
