"There may not yet be as many recordings of Bach's cello suites as there are stars in the sky, but there are certainly as many ways to interpret this monumental music, both in performance and philosophically." Anastasia Kobekina's career has been gaining momentum since she received the Leonard Bernstein Award and an Opus Klassik in 2024, and with the release of the full-length documentary "Jetzt oder nie!" broadcast by ARD. By tackling all six of Bach's suites for solo cello – an Everest for cellists – she seeks to open up "a shared space for interpretation, mine and yours." As with her previous album for Sony Classical, the highly acclaimed Venice, Anastasia Kobekina promises a new approach to familiar music. She plays on period instruments, bringing a historically informed perspective to these iconic works. The works themselves represent the most inwardly focused and revered music of the Baroque composer. Each consists of a prelude followed by a suite of dances. What adds to the iconic status of these suites is the mystery surrounding their creation. No autograph manuscript exists – only a copy, in the hand of Anna Magdalena Bach, the composer's second wife – while the original recipient of these works remains unknown.
