Rediscover the four legendary albums of the "Queen of Morna," international diva and emblem of Cape Verdean music, in a 2018 vinyl reissue! Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva," Cesária Évora was a true ambassador for her country worldwide. The Cape Verdean singer was born on August 27, 1941, in Mindelo, Cape Verde. The daughter of a cavaquinho (small guitar) and violin player, she had been singing in bars since she was 14. She was quickly noticed for her vibrant voice and beautiful looks and was discovered by the composer and guitarist Ti Goy, who took her under his wing and had her sing on the radio or aboard Portuguese boats anchored in the bay. When the European public discovered her in 1988, she was 47 years old. Since then, Cesaria has sold more than 5.5 million albums. Her most famous song, "Sodade," sung in Creole, evokes the forced transfer of Cape Verdean workers in the 1950s to the cocoa plantations of São Tomé and Príncipe. A song that will forever be defined as a classic in the world repertoire. After a long itinerant life, filled with concerts and tours that took her to the four corners of the world, the queen of morna passed away in 2011 in her hometown of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. The album Cabo Verde was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997, after being certified double gold. The last single from the album, "Ess Pais," is based on the poem "Quem ca conchê Mindelo, Ca conché Cabo-Verde" written by Manuel de Novas.
