The album is a true masterpiece. Its ten songs, of inexpressible sadness (although their heartbreaking melancholy is alleviated by driving tempos), are a narrative and summary of his experiences in Luanda. On this record, Bonga says, you can find all the emotions that filled my heart at the time, as well as echoes of experiences that would later prove crucial in my life. For the arrangements, I chose acoustic guitar, dikanza and other percussion instruments. The music is semba, with numbers that go from fast to slow, like spiritual numbers. Bonga was encouraged by the critical success of this first effort. He added the sweet melodies of Cape Verdean morna and the rhythmic texture of Congolese rumba to his new songs. Two years later, he felt ready to record a second album, Angola 74, also on the Morabeza label. Bonga sang Sodade, an Amandio Cabral number that Djunga had released as a single. The Angolan wanted to record it as soon as he heard it for the first time. Today, the gravel-voiced singer continues his musical journey by expanding a repertoire that remains rooted in the social and cultural history of a land so long ravaged by incessant war. It was important to re-release these two recordings. They occupy a prominent place among the finest modern African musical productions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0917/0357/4862/files/BONGA-Angola72_74-3567258630221_76393cf6-98b1-4589-a9f1-a1ccf660bd50.jpg?v=1752056275
bonga-best-of-lp
BONGA - Best of | LP

Best Of BONGA "A unique grain, a moaning prayer, and a hip sway that invites delicious surrender: that's Bonga's music.
